Band of the Month: The Mayflies

How did you come up with your band name?
Mayflies have the distinct characteristic of only living outside the water for a day or so, and during this time all they do is fly around and furiously reproduce. Then they die. They don't even have mouths or digestive tracts at this stage in thier life. To us mayflies represent an ethic...Live and love as much as you can in the short time you are on this beautiful earth.

What are some of your favorite albums?
- Bob Dylan: Desire
- Yo La Tengo: Fakebook
- Little Feat: Sailin Shoes
- Grateful Dead: From the Mars Hotel
- Neil Young: On the Beach
- Gram Parsons: GP/Grevious Angel
- Bad Livers: Delusions of Banjer
- Frank Zappa: One Size Fits All
- Helcio Milito: Kilombo
- Talking Heads: Fear of Music

What are your favorite venues to play?
Well, close to home, we've always enjoyed Bent River Brewery in Moline, Yacht Club in Iowa City, The Industry in Iowa City, Old Capitol Brewworks in I.C., Redstone Room in Davenport rocks...far away from home, we've enjoyed Shawnee Cave near Carbondale, Pop's Blue Moon and Broadway Oyster Bar in St Louis, Cervantes Masterpiece Theatre, Mountain Sun Brewery and The Fox Theatre in Colorado....Martyrs, The Horseshoe and Beat Kitchen in Chicago.....there are so many great places to play!

What is your most memorable show?
Wow....tough one. Camp Euforia in 2007 was amazing. Bent River opening for Vince Herman and Great American Taxi was a spectacular night. Our CD release in 2007 at Old Capitol Brewworks in I.C. was pretty special.

Who would you love to play a show with or open for?
If I could just pick anyone? The Dead or any of the spin-off bands. Little Feat. Michael Franti.

Where would you most like to play?
Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. So much great music has gone down there, and it's supposed to be a great sounding room. If we could ever be big enough to play Alpine Valley, I would die of excitement.

What is the best thing about being in the band?
The Mayflies are a group of folks who are not afraid to listen, experiment and communicate fresh ideas while on stage. We've been playing together for long enough now, that everyone's musicianship in the band is at a pretty high level, and we read each other innately. We are like brothers, and it's so incredibly fulfilling to share this energy with one another, and with all the great people who come out to our shows. The feeling I get after a really good night sticks with me for days. I can't even think of any drugs that do that! Well, maybe one....

Any upcoming things that you would like to share?

Friday August 1st in downtown Iowa City at 6:30 pm. It's free! Monday Aug 4th at 6pm in Clear Lake Iowa, for Better than a Dream Festival. August 23rd at The Industry in Iowa City...this is a killer new club in Iowa City. Amazing lights and sound!
